Day in the Life: Priya, Sole-Trader Electrician
Priya’s first job is booked before she finishes her coffee, and it is the kind of job she used to lose.
For a sole trader, the admin is an unpaid second job. Quoting, booking, chasing invoices, filling out certificates. It is the work that piles up after dark, and it sets how many paying jobs she can take on. When a customer messages at 6.40 about a safety switch that keeps tripping, the morning comes down to one thing. She answers fast, or she loses them to the next sparkie who does.
This morning she answered fast without lifting a finger. The message was read, replied to with her two earliest windows, and booked into her calendar once the customer chose one. The reply sounded like her, because it learned from how she writes. The job landed in her scheduling app with the address, the fault, and a note to pack RCD spares.
The quote for yesterday’s switchboard upgrade goes out before she is off the driveway. She talks it through in the van and it comes back itemised against her current supplier pricing, in the format her regulars expect. A quote that used to wait for Sunday night now leaves while the kettle is still warm, which is often the difference between winning the work and watching it go cold.

On site, hands full, she asks for the cable size on the new 20 amp circuit and how far it can run before voltage drop bites. It reads the figure back with the clause reference while she keeps working, so a small slip doesn’t turn into an expensive callback. By the time she signs off, the compliance certificate is half filled from the booking details, and her customers’ information has not travelled anywhere it should not.
By knock-off the invoices have gone out, the slow payers have had a nudge, and the evening is hers again. With the admin off her plate, Priya can take on more of the paid work, without hiring an office she cannot justify yet and without the paperwork capping how big the business gets. That headroom is what the tools are for.
Tom runs a café on much the same setup. His day is here.
