Day in the Life: Eleanor, Law-Firm Partner

Eleanor opens the contract and the first pass is already marked up, which matters because the slow part of her job is the part that does not scale.

The draft came in late from the other side. A partner’s evening is the most expensive way to read it, and careful review is the one place she cannot take a shortcut, however tempting one looks at 9pm. Her constraint is not skill. It is hours, and there are only so many senior ones to go round.

This time the assistant has been through each clause, flagged the three that differ from the position her client agreed, and pulled the precedent language the firm uses to push back. It has not changed a word of the document. It has shown her where to look and why, and left the judgement to her.

The research memo is the part she trusts least and checks the most. Each authority it cites is linked to the judgment, with the paragraph quoted in full, so she reads the source rather than take its word. Where the law is unsettled, it says so. It has not handed her a case that does not exist. It is built to stop when it is unsure, and one fabricated citation in a filing is the kind of mistake that follows a firm around.

When a junior asks whether they can run a client’s documents through it, the answer is already designed in. The matter stays inside the firm’s walls, privilege intact, with nothing fed out to train a model elsewhere.

By mid-afternoon Eleanor has done a day’s review in the time the reading alone used to take. What the firm gets is a senior lawyer’s judgement spread across more matters, at the standard its name depends on, with the confidentiality and the accuracy that standard rests on left intact.
