Day in the Life: Hana, Deputy Principal

Report season used to decide how much of October Hana spent away from the classrooms.

She is deputy principal at a primary school, and the maths of term four is brutal. The admin load spikes at the exact moment the students need the adults most, and the hours come from somewhere. The thing a school can least afford to lose is teacher attention, and that is the first thing the paperwork takes.

This year the comments arrive as drafts that already sound like the teacher who started them, built from that class’s own records and no other. The teacher reads, adjusts, and sends. The voice stays theirs. The hours come back.

A hard email needs to go to a parent, and the draft waiting for her is measured and kind, the tone she would have reached for on a better afternoon. The timetable clash that surfaced this morning is solved three ways before lunch, with the trade-offs laid out so she can choose rather than puzzle.

What lets her use any of it is the line the tool will not cross. Student information stays inside the school’s systems, handled in step with what schools are held to, kept to what each task needs, and not pooled into something a child did not agree to. The assistant helps with the work. It does not get to wander through the children’s lives.

By the last bell the reports are moving, the parent has a thoughtful reply, and Hana spent the day in classrooms instead of behind a desk. Faster reports are the smallest part of it. The rest is skilled teachers kept on the work only they can do, behind a line that keeps the children’s information protected.
